In the following year, he reunited with Kareena Kapoor in the romantic comedy, for which he received his first nomination at Filmfare.

Following the success of Kaminey, Kapoor appeared in a series of films which performed poorly at the box-office, including the drama (2011) and the romance (2012). The 2013 action-drama proved to be his first commercial success in four years. He followed it by playing the title character in Bhardwaj's (2014), an adaptation of 's tragedy. For his performance in the film, Kapoor won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
In 2016, he played a rockstar addicted to drugs in, a crime drama about in the Indian state of, for which he won the. Kapoor's highest-grossing release came in 2018 with 's period drama, one of, in which he portrayed the ruler.
